I love to see well organized firms create lines of stationery and office equipment designed specifically for them, exclusively. Surely not every small business can do this, but many large companies can and don’t. My brother works for an architectural group that customizes everything from their pens and pencils to their 3 ring binders. The downside is that every employee somehow winds up with a stock pile of these things at home. It isn’t quite grand larceny but at the same time, it appears to be abusive to me. One of his co-workers has a collection of every personalized item the group ever has done and is offering it up for sale on the net.

Here’s a new one for you. Believe it or not, my marriage was actually saved by a piece of software. The situation was that I was building a furniture distribution business and the workload was so intense that I had spent many a night at my office, and my wife was growing more and more distant. She felt totally neglected. She was even losing friends, since I had cancelled so many engagements. I didn’t blame her for being so upset. The thing was I felt so close to getting the business where I needed it to be, I couldn’t stop. Then under a sever threat of her leaving me, I searched for all my options. Tote Mixer

Look. I’m not the most aware guy in the world, but I have been around for more years than I’d like to admit. I’m at this cocktail party and this gentleman comes up to me and starts talking about a tote mixer, he’s using at his plant. He saw I was bewildered and asked if I was feeling well. He acted as if everyone on the planet is supposed to be familiar with tote mixers. I certainly was not and still am not. It turned out, he thought I was someone else and came back to explain his position and apologized.

Nifty Wedding Decorations

I really became ostracized when I spoke out against my cousi’s wedding decorations. The entire family wanted to tar and feather me. I realize I have a big mouth but I whispered it to my sister and she is the one who blurted it out. The fact is the decorations were thought pretty nifty by the rest of the guests. I can’t defend myself because I don’t want to cast a cloud on my cousin’s big day. Secretly, I still think the scene was atrocious. I don’t get why there has to be so much glaring opulence for such a spiritual event. My sister said “Have you seen the Vatican lately?”

Burnaby Condo

I did it again. I got in the middle of a family squabble. My aunt was on a tear complaining about her brother, my uncle and his wife moving to Canada to this highly touted Burnaby condo. She was irate over them leaving the family behind. I wanted to give her some solace so I said “I’ll give fifty to one odds that their back in three months.” She took me up on it. Four months later, I am shelling out fifty bucks. Good thing she only bet a dollar. This prompted me to take her up to BC to visit them. After she saw how perfect their place and their life was, She wants to move there.

We hear the statement over and over again, “it’s the little things in life that are the most meaningful.” Of course what counts is who is doing the measuring. For example, 3 ring binders are little things, but to an auto parts store whose business depends on readily available access to catalogues, they are certainly big and important things. When I was a child in elementary school, my fourth grade teacher thought our note books were the nucleus of the atom. She based 75% of our grade on how neat and organized our contents were. My mom thought the essence of a good child was the neatness of our clothing closets. I rest my case.

One of the most essential trades in all of civilization is the heart of the building trades. Of course, I am talking about carpentry. From the ancient cathedral builders to today’s Manitoba carpenters, their importance is vital to us all. They do everything from building forms for bridges to designing and manufacturing delicate furniture. I can’t think of another trade with such a wide spanse of responsibility. I have a long line of carpenters in my family. It extends right up to my father. I’m sad to say it ended at me. I have trouble distinguishing the different ends of a hammer.

Simple Wedding Decorations

We all have had the experience of less being more. That is exactly my take on my nephew’s wedding last March. Instead of the over-the-top hoopla and way-too-busy wedding decorations that resemble Mardi Gras, they opted for class. The subtle, all white atmosphere gave the ceremony the aura of a spiritual union as opposed to a look at me statement. I loved the flower arrangements of white roses and magnolias. The fragrance was heavenly. They even chose the most endearing clasical music. Style and class were in the room. I took enough photos, so I could steal the setting for my up-coming daughter’s wedding.

Vinyl Binders

When I was in school, my seventh grade English teacher had us treat our notebooks like the original draft of the holiest of books. She inspected the outside as well as our notes, every time we attended class. I don’t think she was playing with a full alphabet. I wish we had vinyl binders back then so I could wash it each time before I handed it to her. I always received comments like, “you shoudn’t share your lunch with your notebook” or some other snide remark. Then again, she would have had something to say about the vinyl in any case.
